How To Choose The Perfect Photo For Your Custom Diamond Painting Kit

July 07, 2018

We know that you are super excited to get your custom diamond painting kit created. However, before you choose your photo, please take a few things into consideration. Your picture is undeniably beautiful on your computer, phone, or tablet...but some images can turn into low quality diamond paintings. Therefore, there are a few things you should consider about your chosen photo before you submit it to be turned into a custom diamond painting.

Three majorly helpful tips in choosing the perfect photo for a custom diamond painting:

  1. Choose Large, High-Quality Photos (The larger the pixel size the better).
  2. Pay Careful Attention To The Colors And Shading Of Your Original Photo.
  3. Pick The Canvas Size and Shape That Best Matches That of Your Original Photo.

Pixel quality and size makes a huge difference in a diamond painting. Each pixel is essentially a tiny diamond on your canvas. The more pixels that a photo has, the more detail that will appear on your canvas. Therefore, when your original photo is enlarged on the diamond painting canvas, you will have much more detail.

A good way to test the pixel quality is to zoom in on your image. If the image looks blurry, pixelated or just not right then you might want to consider choosing another photo.

How does color, shadowing, and shading affect my diamond painting?

Please pay close attention to the colors, shading, and shadowing of your original photo. All of the colors in your photo will be magnified roughly 1000x when it is transferred to the diamond painting canvas. Each individual pixel in the photo becomes much more apparent and distinct when on the diamond painting canvas. For the best results, make sure that your original photo is in good lighting.

How Big Should Your Canvas Be?

The larger the canvas size, the more detail your diamond painting will have.

We recommend that you choose a canvas size of AT LEAST 11” x 15” (30 x 40 cm) for any portrait photos with one or more people or animals.

What Size or Shape Canvas Do I Need?

Is your original photo a landscape, portrait, or square shape? Make sure you choose a canvas size that is similar to the shape of your original photo.

For example, if your original image is square, then you will want to choose a canvas something similar to:

  • 11” x 11” (30 x 30 cm)
  • 13” x 13” (45 x 45 cm)
  • And so on…
  • **Please note as an example: If you select a landscape canvas and send us a square photo, we will have to crop your photo to avoid distortion and disproportion on the finished diamond painting canvas. We will do our best to keep the integrity of the original photo. However, the results will not be as ideal if you were to select the proper canvas size and shape.
